January 13: Reflections

Mirrors on trees.

While on unbroken paths today I roved,
Persuaded by a minor injury,
I found myself within a sunny grove,
Whose eucalyptus contemplated me.

I paused to meet one’s eye, and there I found
That to the trunk small mirrors had been fixed,
The joints and knots now winked, and all around
Reflection, art, and fancy intermixed.

And later, from behind a mirrored wall
I sat, observing people stop and stare,
Not seeing me, succumbing to the thrall,
Of their own visages reflected there.

I wondered as I smiled and watched them preen,
When I stopped midst the trees, who might have seen?
